I used flank steak for this recipe, but you can use many other cuts of beef, like top sirloin, flat iron or skirt steak, or beef tenderloin.

Stir-fry the flank steak strips in a heavy wok until just browned. Then remove and set aside.

Healthy broccoli florets are loaded with Vitamins C and K, potassium and fiber! Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and protects the body from damaging free radicals.

What's in the stir-fry sauce?

The sauce is key to this delicious Chinese stir-fry! Here are these simple ingredients.

  • hoisin sauce
  • cooking sherry
  • black soy sauce
  • low-sodium soy sauce
  • white sugar
  • cornstarch
  • red pepper flakes

Recipe notes

  • Black soy sauce can be found at specialty Asian markets or on Amazon. You can leave this out, if desired, and double up on the soy sauce.
  • If you're not able to use flank steak, other great options include sirloin, flat iron or skirt steak, or filet.
  • Slice the beef against the grain. When you look at the beef, you will notice that the fibers are mostly going in one direction. Place the beef in front of you so the fibers are going left to right. Then cut through the fibers (i.e. cut perpendicular to the direction of the fibers).
  • To toast the sesame seeds: Place in a skillet on the stove over medium heat and dry toast it until light brown. Don't overcook.
  • This dish will stay fresh for up to four days in the refrigerator.

Description

This classic Stir-Fry Beef and Broccoli is so easy to prep and cook! No need to order Chinese take-out when you can make this at home in just 30 minutes!

  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • cup sherry
  • 1 tablespoon black soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ¾ pound flank steak, cut into thick strips
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • ½ onion chopped
  • 1 carrot cut into ribbons
  • ½ cup button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 large jalapeƱo pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
  • 1 pound broccoli florets
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Steamed brown rice for serving

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together hoison sauce through red pepper flakes. Add the beef to the bowl and marinate for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the vegetables.
  2. In a large wok, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat and add the beef strips. Cook until browned, about 2-3 minutes, being careful not to overcook. Reserve the leftover marinade. Remove beef from wok and set aside.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of oil to the wok over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrots, mushrooms, peppers, garlic, and ginger, stirring for about 4 minutes until fragrant. Stir in the broccoli florets and cook until crisp-tender, about 4 minutes. Toss in the beef strips and leftover marinade. Cook another 1-2 minutes until heated through. Serve over steamed brown rice. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.
